About Course

HVAC electrical training is the focus of Month 3 of the Tru Tradesman’s Institute HVAC Workforce Development Program, which covers Weeks 9–12. Electrical safety, low and high voltage, wiring diagrams and thermostat wiring, capacitors, contactors, relays and transformers, multimeter basics, a diagnostic sequence, and an introduction to EPA Section 608 and refrigerant safety.

HVAC electrical training: a multimeter, control board and wiring diagram

What you learn in HVAC electrical training

  • Tell low-voltage control circuits from line-voltage circuits and the hazards of each
  • Read a basic wiring diagram and match thermostat terminals
  • Explain what capacitors, contactors, relays and transformers do
  • Describe safe, supervised multimeter use and a no-cool diagnostic sequence
  • Explain why EPA Section 608 exists and what the certification types cover

Month 3 lessons

  1. Electrical Safety, Low Voltage & High Voltage. Tell low-voltage control circuits from line-voltage power circuits and respect the hazards of both.
  2. Wiring Diagrams, Thermostat Wiring & Control Circuits. Read a basic HVAC wiring diagram and match common thermostat terminals.
  3. Capacitors, Contactors, Relays & Transformers. Explain what capacitors, contactors, relays and transformers do in an HVAC system.
  4. Multimeter Basics & Diagnostic Sequence. Describe safe, supervised multimeter use and a systematic no-cool diagnostic sequence.
  5. EPA 608 Introduction, Refrigerant Safety & Month 3 Review. Explain why EPA Section 608 exists, what its certification types cover, and the basics of refrigerant safety.

How you finish Month 3

Each week has video lessons with notes and an assignment, and then a 10-question quiz. After that, the month ends with a 20-question exam. So score 80% or higher on every quiz and exam and finish your assignments. Then your instructor reviews the month and releases your Month 3 Certificate of Completion, and the next month opens.

This course is part of the full HVAC program, and you enroll in all six months at once on the tuition page. Safety always comes first: for example, OSHA explains its hazardous energy rule at 29 CFR 1910.147, and EPA explains refrigerant rules on its Section 608 page.
